Gabrielle Union opened up about her “brutal” journey to parenthood in an emotional Instagram video posted on Monday, December 10. “There were heartbreaks that nearly broke us and streams of tears that turned into raging rivers,” Union, 46, wrote in the caption. “And then came Kaavia James.”

The Being Mary Jane star and her husband, Dwyane Wade, welcomed their first child together with the help of a surrogate on November 7. Union, who suffered nine miscarriages, explained in the more than eight-minute clip that she suffers from a gynecological condition called adenomyosis. (According to WebMD, women who have adenomyosis have double the risk of miscarrying)

“We just decided as a family that the best and safest route, and most successful route was a gestational carrier,” Union revealed in the clip. “For us, it was our embryo so our surrogate has no genetic tie to our baby.”

Before Kaavia’s birth, the We’re Going to Need More Wine author took a moment to reflect. “We’re finally getting to this place where there’s this little person that will call me mom,” Union gushed. “We will be in the room as our child comes into the world. We’re just so thankful and grateful for the gift that they’ve given us.”

Moments later, Kaavia is seen being delivered via C-section as Union and the Miami Heat player, 36, watch on in awe.
